Azerbaijani activist starves for 35 days

Zamin Salayev, an activist of the opposition party of the Azerbaijan People’s Front, has been starving in protest for 35 days. His state of health remains grave. The prisoner cannot walk and speaks with difficulty, but doctors do not visit him.

The representatives of the Ombudsman visited Salaev on March 11. The General Prosecutor’s Office and the General Medical Department of the Ministry of Justice were contacted about him.

On February 8, the court in Baku arrested Zamin Salayev for three months. Criminal proceedings have been instituted against him under article 221.3 of the Criminal Code (hooliganism - use of force) and he faces up to five years of imprisonment.

Salaev claimed that the accusation against him is false. He did not attack anyone, but defended himself from an unknown passer-by with a knife.
