Georgia received candidate status for joining the European Union

Today, at a meeting of the European Council in Brussels, it was decided to grant Georgia candidate status for accession to the EU. This was announced by the President of the European Council Charles Michel.

In addition, European leaders decided to begin negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova on the issue of joining the European Union. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky reacted to this step. “Victory for Ukraine. Victory for all of Europe,” he tweeted.

Georgia applied for EU membership in March 2022. In June 2022, the heads of state and missions of the European Union granted the status of candidate countries to Ukraine and Moldova, but Georgia was refused. This happened today.
