«Memorial»: «Two residents of Chechnya died in the police»

At the end of 2022, two men were abducted by Chechen security forces in different places. Both were taken to police stations, where they died. Their relatives were forbidden to organize traditional memorial as reported by the Human Rights Center «Memorial».

In particular, Akhmed Gatayev was taken from a house in Alhazurovo, Urus-Martan district, by the security forces on December 11-12. Two weeks later, they told their families that the man had died. Gataev was abducted and brutally tortured in 2013. After his release, he became isolated because of the psychological trauma of the detention.

On November 19, according to "Memorial" sources, Gilani Dukhaev was kidnapped in the village of Ishcherskaya, Nauru District. The man was taken to the police department of the Grozny Zavodsky District, where he died eight days later. His family had previously been subjected to repression. During the Chechen-Russian war, Gilani’s older brother and father Duhayev were kidnapped and killed by the federal military.
