A Crimean Tatar political prisoner suffering from serious illnesses died in a Russian remand centre.

A 60-year-old political prisoner, Crimean Tatar Cemil Gafarov, died in Novocherkassk prison. He was consistently denied a medical examination.
Gafarov suffered a massive myocardial infarction in 2017 before criminal proceedings were initiated. He was then diagnosed with chronic kidney failure and required regular dialysis of the kidneys, which could not be performed in SIZO. He also suffered a heart attack in custody.
On January 11, 2023, Cemil Gafarov was sentenced to 13 years in prison. He was found guilty of belonging to the Islamic party «Hizb ut-Tahrir», banned in Russia and freely operating in Ukraine and most European countries. Russia is the only country in the world that has declared «Hizb ut-Tahrir» a terrorist organization.
