Protest against presence of Russian military base in Armenia

A protest action organized by the party “For the Sake of the Republic” took place in the Armenian city of Gyumri, demanding the withdrawal of the Russian military base from the territory of Armenia.

Party leader Arman Babajanyan referred to sociological surveys, according to which the majority of Armenian citizens (70%) consider the presence of the Russian base as a threat.

“Armenia’s security cannot be built on the basis of a foreign state. The loss of Karabakh took place before the eyes of the Russian base. Today, an important step in our agenda for restoring sovereignty is saying goodbye to the Russian military presence. It poses a threat to the independence and security of Armenia; the country’s true security is ensured by its own armed forces, regardless of politics and multilateral allied relations,” Babajanyan noted.

Billionaire and former Nagorno-Karabakh state minister Ruben Vardanyan, sentenced in Baku to 20 years in prison, rejected the legal force of the ruling and dropped his appeal. His family explained that this decision stemmed from the fact that, in their view, the trial was a "staged performance" rather than a proper trial: the hearings were held behind closed doors, without access to independent observers, and the prosecution's motions were ignored. The full text of the verdict was also not released.
