Iraqi refugee who organised Quran burnings killed in Sweden
Salvan Momika, a 38-year-old refugee from Iraq known for publicly burning the Quran, was shot dead at his home in Sweden. His body was found in Södertälje, south of Stockholm. The information was confirmed by Swedish authorities, and five people were detained.

On January 30, the Stockholm District Court was supposed to hear Salvan Momika’s case of inciting ethnic hatred. After his murder, another defendant in the case, Salvan Najem, commented on the news of the incident on Twitter with the words “I’m next”.

In the summer of 2023, Momika repeatedly burned the Quran in the Swedish capital. At one of the events, he tore out pages from the book, wiped his shoes with them, and then put bacon in them and set them on fire. The authorities of Iraq's Al-Kufa, Salwan Momik's hometown, have offered a reward of two million dollars and a Koran made of two kilograms of gold to anyone who kills him. Baghdad officials have demanded his extradition.
