Ukraine proposed to change «russified» name of Georgia
The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine proposed to officially change the name of Georgia to Sakartvelo, the self-name of the country used by Georgians. The purpose of such a decision is to contribute to the rapprochement of the two countries and get rid of the «Russified» name.
To achieve the goal of the draft law, it is proposed to introduce in Ukraine the use of the proposed name in official correspondence, communication and the media. After renaming Georgian will be called Kartvali.
The Georgian authorities have long called upon other countries to abandon the word «Georgia» referring to its Russian etymology and to use «Sakartvelo» instead. The first country in the EU to use this name in official documentation was Lithuania (2021).
