Protests against the extradition of Chechen nationals from Kazakhstan to Russia took place in Warsaw and Vienna

Chechen activists staged a picket outside the Kazakh embassy in Warsaw, protesting the planned extradition of Mansur Movlayev to Russia. Participants also expressed their support for Zelimkhan Murtazov, who has been held in the transit zone of Astana Airport for two months.

Protesters chanted slogans and held signs calling on Kazakhstan not to extradite Movlayev and to grant him asylum: "Kazakhstan, are you an independent country or a branch of Russia?"; "Brotherly people of Kazakhstan, don't allow your authorities to extradite Mansur Movlayev."; "Kazakhstan, grant asylum to Zelimkhan Murtazov, a Chechen who doesn't want to kill Ukrainians."

A similar protest took place shortly before outside the Kazakh embassy in Vienna. Protesters demanded the immediate release of Movlayev and Murtazov, as well as international protection.

The situation escalated after the Kazakh Prosecutor General's Office announced on January 30 that it had decided to extradite Mansur Movlayev to Russian authorities. Human rights activists claim he faces torture and murder in his home country. His lawyers reported that the extradition decision has been appealed.

As for Zelimkhan Murtazov, he has been held in the transit zone of Astana Airport since Kazakhstan rejected his asylum application. According to his brother, Murtazov deserted from the Russian army and fears persecution and torture if returned.
