Georgian Authorities Assess Chances of Accession to EU

The likelihood of Georgia being granted EU candidate status is estimated at 50/50. This was stated by Irakli Kobakhidze, Chairman of the ruling party «Georgian Dream».
This is a political decision. If it were a technical, fact-based decision, our chances would be 100%. The main thing for us is that the "global party of war" should not once again intervene in the matter, Kobakhidze said.

The «Georgian Dream» claims that there are important politicians abroad who want to draw Georgia into the war, to open a second front against Russia. They are called the «global party of war» in the ruling party, and the opposition «United National Movement» and its allies - the «local party of war».

On the eve of the third final reading, the Parliament of Georgia approved amendments to the law «On Common Courts», which are part of the recommendations of the European Union for obtaining the country’s candidate status. The Parliament took into account the recommendations of the Venice Commission and changed the rules regarding the selection of judges.

By the end of the year Georgia is waiting for the status of candidate. For this purpose it has to implement 12 recommendations. Representatives of the ruling party say that the country will comply with all of them by the end of June, except one - the depolarization between the government and the opposition.
