Swiss authorities refuse to deport a refugee from Chechnya to Russia

40-year-old native of Chechnya, refugee Ali Batayev was released from a deportation prison in Switzerland. Thus, the country's authorities refused to deport him to the Russian Federation, where he faced torture and death.

As the head of the human rights organization “European Peace House” Lachin Mamishov noted, publications in the media and appeals to the President of Switzerland played an important role in the release of Batayev. Now on the agenda is a re-examination of the man’s application for political asylum.

In 2022, Ali Bataev left Ukraine, where he lived and received a residence permit, to Switzerland. In September 2022, he was placed in a deportation center, and since then he has been threatened with extradition to Russia. Batayev went on a hunger strike in protest, after which he required hospitalization.
