Journalist Ganimat Zahid has been sentenced in absentia by a Baku court to seven years in prison. He was found guilty of incitement against the state. According to the prosecution, in July 2018, Zahid published materials on YouTube containing open calls for violent actions against the Azerbaijani authorities.
Over four days, the prisoner, a native of Ingushetia, Abdul-Malik Albagachiev, had four epileptic seizures. This was reported by the Public Verdict Foundation and lawyer Irina Biryukova.
Earlier, the defense lawyer called the decision of the Astrakhan Regional Court to uphold Albagachiev’s transfer to prison regime illegal. The court did not take into account his state of health and did not accept an independent medical examination as evidence.
Abdul-Malik Albagachiev suffers from headaches and epilepsy. Before his arrest, according to his relatives, he was an absolutely healthy person.
The man was convicted in 2018. He was charged with participating in an illegal armed group in Syria. Confessions of guilt were extracted by torture. However, he did not admit guilt.
