In its report, "Georgia – Anatomy of Repression: 500 Days of Protests, Dispersals, and Resilience," Amnesty International called for the Georgian government to end its smear campaigns against independent media, journalists, and opposition politicians. The organization also recommended that the EU and international partners take steps in this direction.
Amnesty International called on the Georgian authorities to prevent public officials from participating in, facilitating, or supporting disinformation campaigns. The report's authors note that investigations into media funding sources and tax records should not be used as a tool of pressure or discreditation.
Furthermore, the organization demands that the Georgian government repeal the Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence and amend the Law on Grants, which restrict independent media.
Amnesty International insists on a thorough investigation of any unlawful use of force, including tear gas, water cannons, and batons, during the dispersal of protests.
The report also addresses the use of the judicial system to exert pressure. Amnesty International calls for an independent review of all sentences handed down against protesters and activists since April 2024 and the release of those detained if there is no credible charge against them.
