The Orenburg Regional Court has begun hearing the state prosecution's appeal in the 6-million-ruble bribe case involving former senator Rauf Arashukov. Ali Karimli, the leader of the opposition Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), who is under arrest, expressed gratitude to public figures, lawyers, and politicians for the formation of a committee to protect his rights. He noted that, given the current repression, this action requires significant civic courage and thanked Azerbaijan's "defiant intelligentsia" for their support.
Karimli also called on democratic forces to unite to more effectively fight for the release of political prisoners, calling the creation of the committee an important step toward consolidation and the protection of the rights of all victims of repression in Azerbaijan.
Since late 2025, Ali Karimli has been a defendant in the case of former head of the Presidential Administration Ramiz Mehdiyev, whom investigators believe is involved in an attempted coup. The PFPA calls the charges against Karimli and other opposition figures fabricated and politically motivated. The party denies any "Russian connection" or involvement in the coup attempts, emphasizing its commitment to European integration and peaceful methods of struggle.
The European Parliament adopted a resolution condemning arbitrary arrests and sentences in Azerbaijan. The resolution expresses concern over the growing number of political prisoners, which, according to the European Parliament, has exceeded 400.
