Billionaire and former Nagorno-Karabakh state minister Ruben Vardanyan, sentenced in Baku to 20 years in prison, rejected the legal force of the ruling and dropped his appeal. His family explained that this decision stemmed from the fact that, in their view, the trial was a "staged performance" rather than a proper trial: the hearings were held behind closed doors, without access to independent observers, and the prosecution's motions were ignored. The full text of the verdict was also not released.
Australia and New Zealand impose sanctions against Kadyrov's mother
The authorities of Australia and New Zealand have joined international sanctions against the mother of the head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov. Aimani Kadyrova, as the president of the Regional Public Foundation named after Akhmat-Khadzhi Kadyrov, was named as being involved in "taking children out of Ukraine."
Earlier, the European Union and the United States imposed restrictions on Aimani Kadyrova and the organization she heads. Later, Ramzan Kadyrov demanded that the United States lift these sanctions. The head of Chechnya said that his mother "is engaged only in charitable activities," and called the decision of the American authorities "a deliberate and cynical disregard for all ethical standards." Kadyrov also said that Western sanctions can be regarded as recognition of her services in supporting the Russian state.
