An Azerbaijani opposition figure accused Aliyev of cowardice and embezzlement of public funds

Azerbaijani opposition figure Gulu Mammadli sharply criticized President Ilham Aliyev, accusing him of insulting the memory of those killed in the Karabakh war. On his Facebook page, he published an appeal and a video showing the removal of a memorial plaque depicting a fallen soldier, a "martyr."

Mammadli claimed that the order to remove it came from Aliyev, who, according to the opposition figure, seeks to claim sole credit for the victory. He recalled that during the 2020 war, the president himself was in a bunker, while his son was abroad.

"Not a single minister, head of the executive body, or official in Azerbaijan sent their children to the front. During those difficult days, their children vacationed abroad, while the children of the Azerbaijani people, deprived of all rights and privileges, defended the homeland," the opposition figure emphasized.

Gulu Mammadli also accused the Aliyev family of embezzling state funds and amassing vast wealth. He called on the Azerbaijani people not to remain silent in the face of disrespect for the memory of the heroes who gave their lives for the liberation of their homeland.

Billionaire and former Nagorno-Karabakh state minister Ruben Vardanyan, sentenced in Baku to 20 years in prison, rejected the legal force of the ruling and dropped his appeal. His family explained that this decision stemmed from the fact that, in their view, the trial was a "staged performance" rather than a proper trial: the hearings were held behind closed doors, without access to independent observers, and the prosecution's motions were ignored. The full text of the verdict was also not released.
