Members of the Azerbaijani Parliament refused to come to Russia

The delegation of the Azerbaijani Parliament headed by First Vice-Speaker Ali Akhmedov will not participate in the scheduled meeting of the Commission on Interparliamentary Cooperation with the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation in Moscow.

"The reason for this is the demonstrative, targeted and lawless arbitrariness of murders and acts of violence against Azerbaijanis committed by law enforcement agencies on ethnic grounds in the city of Yekaterinburg of the Russian Federation, as well as the regular nature of such cases recently," the Azerbaijani department said in a statement.

Earlier, the Ministry of Culture of Azerbaijan announced the cancellation of all events related to Russia. The reason for this was "targeted murders and violent acts committed against Azerbaijanis on the basis of ethnicity in Yekaterinburg."

Earlier, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry expressed a protest to Russia after raids in Yekaterinburg on June 27. Then, Russian security forces killed two Azerbaijani citizens, wounded several people and detained nine. According to Russian investigators, they are suspected of murder. According to lawyers, some of the detainees were tortured.

Billionaire and former Nagorno-Karabakh state minister Ruben Vardanyan, sentenced in Baku to 20 years in prison, rejected the legal force of the ruling and dropped his appeal. His family explained that this decision stemmed from the fact that, in their view, the trial was a "staged performance" rather than a proper trial: the hearings were held behind closed doors, without access to independent observers, and the prosecution's motions were ignored. The full text of the verdict was also not released.
