Macron Supports Pashinyan's Pro-European Course

During the European Political Community summit in Yerevan, French President Emmanuel Macron expressed support for Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's policy of rapprochement with Europe.

Macron noted that following the revolutionary events of 2018, Armenia has changed its development vector, moving away from its status as a "Russian satellite."

"The fact that we are seeing so many first visits to your country speaks volumes. Just eight years ago, this country was perceived internationally as a de facto Russian satellite," Macron emphasized.

He also emphasized the importance of strengthening European influence in Armenia's security, recalling the presence of approximately 4,000 Russian troops and over 1,000 border guards in the country.

"There are still 4,000 Russian troops and over 1,000 border guards on Armenian territory. Therefore, Europe must help this country secure its borders more independently," the French leader said.

Following the official events, the highest state awards were exchanged. Emmanuel Macron received the Armenian Order of Glory, while President Vahagn Khachaturyan and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan received the French Legion of Honor, Grand Cross. At the dinner in Yerevan, Macron and Pashinyan performed the song "La Bohème" together. The French president performed the vocals, while the Armenian prime minister accompanied him on percussion.
