During the annual "Year in Review" press conference, Russian President Vladimir Putin, responding to a question about support for young families, noted the tradition of early marriages in the North Caucasus. He said he believed this was "right" and suggested "following their example," citing Ramzan Kadyrov's large family.
The ECHR awarded Novaya Gazeta and its journalists compensation for threats from the Chechen authorities
The European Court of Human Rights has upheld the complaint of Novaya Gazeta and its employees, filed in connection with threats from the Chechen leadership. The ECHR awarded the corresponding compensation: 7,500 euros to the newspaper, 9,800 euros each to its directors Dmitry Muratov and Sergei Kozheurov, as well as journalist Elena Milashina.
In 2017, Milashina published an article about mass executions and torture in Chechnya. After that, she and the newspaper were attacked with criticism and threats by representatives of the republic's leadership, including Ramzan Kadyrov. In February 2022, fearing for her safety, Milashina was forced to temporarily leave Russia.
On July 4, 2023, about 10-15 masked men attacked Elena Milashina and lawyer Alexander Nemov on the way from the airport to Grozny. They were on their way to the announcement of the verdict in the case of Zarema Musayeva. Both victims received serious injuries. The Investigative Committee suspended the investigation. The formal reason is the inability to find suspects.
