The British Embassy in Tbilisi has called on the Georgian government to strengthen measures to prevent Russian oil supplies using the so-called "shadow fleet." The diplomatic mission believes that these schemes facilitate sanctions evasion and pose a threat to maritime security and the environment.
Gerchinsky: Tbilisi-Brussels relations are at their lowest point
EU Ambassador to Georgia Pavel Gerchinsky stated at a meeting with local media representatives that the country's European integration has stopped. According to him, Tbilisi-Brussels relations are at their lowest point due to a number of undemocratic decisions by the Georgian authorities. In particular, the diplomat noted the deplorable situation with freedom of the press.
"For many years, we believed that the primary task was to help develop media standards. Unfortunately, today we see that priorities have changed dramatically. Now the priority is the physical protection of journalists from beatings, physical and verbal aggression, intimidation, persecution, cruel treatment and even torture," the ambassador shared.
He emphasized that "such cruel treatment of the media" is observed on the first anniversary of Georgia being granted candidate status for joining the European Union.
Recall that mass protests in Georgia began after the government announced the suspension of negotiations on the country's European integration until 2028, and have been going on for 22 days now. The main demands of the demonstrators are new elections, the release of detained protesters, and Georgia's return to the European path.
