The Supreme Court of Kazakhstan has suspended the extradition of Chechen activist Mansur Movlayev to Russia. The decision was made pending the consideration of his claim against the denial of refugee status, according to lawyer Murat Adam.
Earlier, Kazakhstan's Prosecutor General's Office granted Russia's request, despite Movlayev's asylum-seeker status. Subsequently, the UN Human Rights Committee called for his non-extradition to Russia, where he is accused of financing extremism. Activists from the Adat movement believe the case is fabricated.
Mansur Movlayev, detained in May 2025, is wanted in Chechnya on charges of financing extremism. He previously served a sentence for drug trafficking, which he considers politically motivated. He also claims that his brothers were kidnapped and tortured in police custody.
After his release in 2022, he fled to Kyrgyzstan, from where he was deported, eventually ending up in Kazakhstan.
