Crimean Tatar again placed in strict conditions
After arriving at IK-1 in the Kostroma region, Crimean Tatar Edem Smailov was immediately placed in a cell-type room - PKT. Before that, he served his sentence in the same region, but in IK-7.
 
In colony No. 7, Smailov was in strict conditions of detention since February 2024. In addition, he was regularly placed in a punishment cell and a PKT. According to Smailov's wife, penalties are assigned to him in order to exclude the possibility of parole. The man was sent to the punishment cell for various reasons: he adjusted his glasses, forgot to put on a hat, was without an apron at his workplace in the sewing shop, read a book at an unspecified time.
 
In prison, Smailov's eyesight deteriorated and periodontal disease worsened. The Crimean Tatar is not being examined, he was only given pills to improve blood circulation.
 
On September 16, 2022, the Southern District Military Court of Rostov-on-Don sentenced Edem Smailov to 13 years in prison. He was accused of participating in the Islamic party Hizb ut-Tahrir, which is recognized as a terrorist organization in the Russian Federation. However, the man did not admit guilt and stated that he was being persecuted for his religious beliefs.
