The Chechen Ombudsman described how scammers tried to impersonate his voice

The Chechen Human Rights Commissioner, Mansur Soltayev, described an attempted fraud using his voice. He said he received a call from an unknown number, who began talking incoherently.

Soltayev suspected the scammers were planning to create a fake audio recording of his voice.

"I quickly realized it was an attempt to gather audio material to create a fake message and carry out subsequent fraudulent activity. A little earlier, an urgent request for a money transfer came from a respected acquaintance of mine. When I asked for a voicemail, I received a reply with his real voice. It later became clear that the scammers had generated the audio message using neural networks," the human rights commissioner explained.

Soltayev warned that scammers are increasingly hacking accounts, using duplicate contacts, and scamming people into giving away money. Modern technology allows them to fake not only voices but also photos and videos. In this regard, he called on citizens to be extremely careful and not to transfer money if such a request was received on his behalf in any form – message, audio or video recording.
