Opposition activist refused to return Russian citizenship

The court rejected the complaint in the case of the deprivation of citizenship of the opponent of the war in Ukraine and activist Arshak Makichyan. The defense intends to appeal to the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation. The basis for the deprivation of citizenship of the Makichyan family was the allegedly unreliable information that the natives of Armenia Arshak, his brothers and father provided to Russian law enforcement agencies.

Forced to leave Russia earlier and living in Berlin, Arshak Makichyan reported that the Russian authorities also banned his brother and father from entering the country. Both - for 50 years, which is actually a life sentence. However, they did not engage in any opposition activity.

The activist's family left Armenia in the 1990s. Arshak received Russian citizenship in 2004 and studied at the Moscow Conservatory. In 2022, Makichyan often went to anti-war actions.
