Opposition Dagestani blogger's prison term reduced
The Supreme Court of Tatarstan partially upheld the appeal against the sentence of former serviceman, native of Dagestan, opposition blogger Askhabali Alibekov, under the pseudonym "Wild Paratrooper". His sentence was reduced from 2 years 4 months to 2 years.
 
Earlier, the human rights project "Support for Political Prisoners. Memorial" recognized Askhabali Alibekov as a political prisoner. In March 2023, he was sentenced to one year and two months in prison for "discrediting" the Russian army. The man advocated for peace after the start of the "SVO". According to the lawyer, the defendant wanted to save his son from death in the war with Ukraine. In 2018, he served in the Black Sea Fleet and called for a boycott of the presidential elections in the Russian Federation.
 
On the night of February 20, 2024, Alibekov was taken off a train in Kazan, where he was traveling to become an election observer. He was attacked by police officers, thrown to the ground, and beaten on the body and face. A criminal case was opened against Alibekov on charges of using violence against police officers. In October 2024, he was sentenced to 2 years and 4 months in prison for "assaulting a police officer."
