A Chechen released after a 20-year sentence was accused of possessing weapons

On October 10, the Lyublinsky District Court of Moscow found 43-year-old Ilyas Dovletmurzaev, a native of the Chechen village of Aslanbek-Sheripovo, guilty of illegal possession of weapons.

In 2005, he was already sentenced to 20 years for theft, robbery, theft of documents, hooliganism and carrying a firearm. He tried to challenge the sentence in the Supreme Court of Russia, but to no avail.

Dovletmurzaev was transferred to serve his sentence in Penal Colony No. 5 in the Arkhangelsk Region. The convicted man's elderly mother, Zulai Sapaeva, who lives in Grozny, could not visit her son on the other side of the country, and in 2021, the European Court of Human Rights recognized this as a violation of her rights and awarded compensation in the amount of 6 thousand euros.

After being released from prison, Dovletmurzaev came to Moscow, where he was arrested in July 2023 on charges of possessing ammunition. As stated in the decision on choosing a preventive measure, he was detained "at the scene by police officers upon receiving a report of a violation of public order near the Bright shopping center - a fight between 10 people of Caucasian appearance with the use of weapons." During the search, 7 pistol cartridges were found in his pocket. On August 14, the case under Article 222 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("illegal circulation of weapons and ammunition") was already submitted to the court, a week later the trial began, and on October 10, a guilty verdict was handed down. Dovletmurzaev appealed it, but the results of the appeal are not yet known. There is also no information about what punishment the judge sentenced him - the text of the verdict has not yet been made public. The article provides for imprisonment for a term of 3 to 5 years.
