Pashinyan and Aliyev discussed strengthening peace

On the sidelines of the 7th European Political Community Summit in Copenhagen, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev met. The parties noted the significance of the Washington Agreements and reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening peace.

During the talks, they discussed the development of transport links and infrastructure in the region, as well as the progress of the TRIPP route project. Furthermore, agreement was reached on completing the OSCE Minsk Process and related structures. The leaders agreed to continue contacts and steps to build confidence between the countries.

On August 8, the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan signed a joint declaration in Washington aimed at a peaceful resolution of the conflict. According to the agreement, Armenia will grant the United States long-term rights to develop the Trump Route (TRIPP), which is necessary for Azerbaijan to establish a land link with Nakhchivan through Armenian territory. The foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan also signed a joint appeal to close the OSCE Minsk Group, which included Russia, and confirmed the text of the future peace agreement.

Billionaire and former Nagorno-Karabakh state minister Ruben Vardanyan, sentenced in Baku to 20 years in prison, rejected the legal force of the ruling and dropped his appeal. His family explained that this decision stemmed from the fact that, in their view, the trial was a "staged performance" rather than a proper trial: the hearings were held behind closed doors, without access to independent observers, and the prosecution's motions were ignored. The full text of the verdict was also not released.
