Criminal case opened in Karachay-Cherkessia over death of two climbers
A criminal case has been opened in Karachay-Cherkessia over negligence following the death of two climbers – employees of the fire and emergency rescue services of Stavropol Krai. The tragedy occurred during a training camp held in the region from February 17 to 21. The men were following a mountain route to the Orlyonok tract, located in the Sofia Gorge of the Zelenchuksky District, and found themselves in the place of an avalanche. Law enforcement officials believe that the reason for this outcome was the negligence of the organizers. A man who was not allowed to participate in the camp also took part in the hike.

The Investigative Committee Directorate for Karachay-Cherkessia reported that “measures to ensure safety on the route were not taken, and the likelihood of avalanches during the specified period of time was ignored.” The investigation of the criminal case is ongoing.
