Georgian President Disloyal to Government Faces Impeachment

The ruling Georgian Dream party is launching the impeachment proceedings against Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili. The reason was the visits to Europe, which, according to the constitution, the president had to coordinate with the government. This statement was made by party leader Irakli Kobakhidze.

A prerequisite for the impeachment of the president is 100 deputies' votes. The ruling party does not have such a resource, that is, the support of the opposition is necessary. However, according to Kobakhidze, at a meeting of the political council of the Georgian Dream, it was decided to initiate the procedure, despite this fact.

As previously reported, the government did not approve of Salome Zurabishvili's decision to meet with European leaders to discuss the issue of support in granting Georgia the status of an EU candidate. Despite this, the president paid a visit to her German counterpart, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and today she is scheduled to meet with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel. The administration of the Georgian government stated that they did not approve the president's trips to Germany, Ukraine, Switzerland, Poland, Belgium, Denmark, the United Arab Emirates, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and Israel.

The head of the ruling party, Irakli Kobakhidze, argues that the president's foreign visits are "counterproductive" and could prevent Georgia from obtaining EU candidate status. In addition, he told reporters at a press conference that Georgian Dream would appeal to the Constitutional Court regarding the violation of the Constitution by the President.
