Chechen sentenced in Kyrgyzstan claims torture

The lawyer of a native of Chechnya, Mansur Movlaev, filed a statement of violence with the National Center for the Prevention of Torture of Kyrgyzstan. The document states that the prisoner was beaten by security forces in the pre-trial detention center.

Mansur Movlaev reported torture at a meeting of the Bishkek City Court, where it was planned to consider his appeal. According to him, he is being forced to abandon the trial.

In October, a court in Bishkek sentenced Mansur Movlaev to six months in prison for illegally crossing the border of Kyrgyzstan. According to a court decision, after his release he will be deported to Russia, which he fears due to possible torture.

27-year-old Mansur Movlaev asked to be sentenced to the maximum term under this article - two years. He flew to Bishkek in August and was detained by officers of the State Committee for National Security of Kyrgyzstan. Previously, he was put on the federal wanted list in Russia.

In 2020, Movlaev was sentenced to three years on charges of financing extremism. Human rights activists say he was persecuted for criticizing the Chechen authorities against human rights violations and repression. In 2022, the man was released on parole, but he was detained by security forces in Chechnya. Movlaev escaped and was able to reach Kyrgyzstan illegally.
