Putin and Pashinyan discussed the peace talks in the South Caucasus held in the United States

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation, which, according to the Kremlin, was initiated by the Armenian side.

It is reported that the head of the Armenian government informed the Russian leader about the results of the meeting with the presidents of the United States and Azerbaijan, Donald Trump and Ilham Aliyev, which took place on August 8 at the White House. Putin, in turn, told Pashinyan about the results of the conversation with Donald Trump's special envoy Steven Witkoff and about preparations for a personal meeting with the American president in Alaska.

The Russian president emphasized the importance of steps leading to sustainable peace between Yerevan and Baku, and confirmed his readiness to facilitate the unblocking of transport communications and the normalization of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations within the framework of the 2020-2022 agreements.

Pashinyan supported steps aimed at a peaceful settlement of the "Ukrainian crisis". The parties also touched upon issues on the bilateral agenda, paid attention to the development of trade and investment, as well as interaction within the Eurasian Economic Union.

Earlier, during a visit to Washington, Pashinyan signed an agreement according to which Armenia transfers the strategic 40-kilometer transport route through the Syunik region to the United States for 99 years. According to Reuters, the corridor gives America exclusive access to the infrastructure of the South Caucasus, a region neighboring Russia, Europe, Turkey and Iran.

Billionaire and former Nagorno-Karabakh state minister Ruben Vardanyan, sentenced in Baku to 20 years in prison, rejected the legal force of the ruling and dropped his appeal. His family explained that this decision stemmed from the fact that, in their view, the trial was a "staged performance" rather than a proper trial: the hearings were held behind closed doors, without access to independent observers, and the prosecution's motions were ignored. The full text of the verdict was also not released.
