The Georgian government partially overcame the president's veto on the bill on foreign agents

The Legal Committee of the Georgian Parliament approved overcoming the president's veto on the bill on foreign agents. Tomorrow the issue will be discussed at a plenary meeting of the country's parliament.

On May 18, Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili vetoed the above-mentioned law. In response, Parliament Speaker Papuashvili said that the legislature would override the veto.

“This law, which in its essence, in its spirit is Russian, contradicts our Constitution and all European standards and, thus, represents an obstacle to our European path,” is how Zurabishvili justified her ban.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Bärbock expressed her opinion, saying that she was “incredibly hurt” by the decision of the Georgian government to “block the dream” of joining the EU with the law on foreign agents.

“If the law is adopted, only Russian President Vladimir Putin will be happy with it. With such actions, the Georgian government acts against its own population, which, as we see, takes to the streets again and again. Thus, the government opposes Georgia's European prospects. We, as EU member states, have reaffirmed the vision of Europe to the Georgians and accordingly extended our hand, but it is clear that the European path can be fixed not only if the population wants to follow this path, it also requires a government,” warned Burbock.

US Vice President Kamala Harris said that she and President Joe Biden are watching with concern the events in Georgia that are unfolding around the law on foreign agents. She emphasized that the United States is on the side of the Georgian people.
