Relatives of former Makhachkala mayor sentenced to life imprisonment are to have their property confiscated

The Russian Prosecutor General's Office has filed a lawsuit against former Makhachkala mayor Said Amirov, who is serving a life sentence, and 18 of his relatives, demanding the return of illegally appropriated assets worth 2 billion rubles to state ownership.

The investigation claims that during Amirov's rule (1998-2014), he used his official position to transfer city land and buildings to his relatives. The lawsuit describes in detail the schemes: from the privatization of the Rossiya movie theater to the allocation of a plot of land for a maternity hospital to Amirov's wife and the transfer of land in the Talgi sanatorium to relatives.

The Prosecutor General's Office is demanding the return of dozens of real estate properties, including hotels and retail space. This is not the first episode in Amirov's corruption case - earlier, in 2022, his assets worth 5 billion rubles were confiscated, including municipal enterprises that he privatized through affiliated companies.

In May, Said Amirov filed dozens of lawsuits against the administration of the institution. Being disabled, he demanded that the conditions of his detention be improved. Amirov, who uses a wheelchair, complained about insufficient nutrition and the confiscation of food, as well as the lack of adaptation of the cell for the disabled. Most of his demands were rejected.

In 2015, Amirov was sentenced to life imprisonment in a case of organizing murders, banditry and terrorism. He did not admit his guilt.
