Discontent with the presence of the Russian military base is growing in Armenia

A large-scale protest is planned in Armenia demanding the withdrawal of the Russian military base stationed in the city of Gyumri. This was announced by the chairman of the "For the Sake of the Republic" party Armen Babajanyan, announcing a rally on August 23.

Babajanyan emphasized that the presence of the Russian base does not ensure the security of Armenia, referring to a number of recent events, including the war in Karabakh. In his opinion, the country's true security should be ensured by its own armed forces.

"Armenia's security cannot be built on the basis of a foreign state. The war of 2020, the attacks on the sovereign territory of Armenia in 2022, and, ultimately, the loss of Karabakh took place before the eyes of the Russian base. Today, an important step in our agenda for the restoration of sovereignty is to say goodbye to the Russian military presence. The 102nd military base poses a threat to the independence and security of Armenia; “The true security of the country is ensured by its own armed forces, regardless of politics and multilateral alliance relations,” Babajanyan emphasized.

Billionaire and former Nagorno-Karabakh state minister Ruben Vardanyan, sentenced in Baku to 20 years in prison, rejected the legal force of the ruling and dropped his appeal. His family explained that this decision stemmed from the fact that, in their view, the trial was a "staged performance" rather than a proper trial: the hearings were held behind closed doors, without access to independent observers, and the prosecution's motions were ignored. The full text of the verdict was also not released.
