February 23, 1944, marked a dark date in the history of two peoples of the North Caucasus: on the orders of Joseph Stalin, the total deportation of the Chechens and Ingush began. Half a million people were forcibly uprooted from their homes and sent into exile in Central Asia and Siberia.
Azerbaijan celebrates National Flag Day
On November 9, Azerbaijan celebrates National Flag Day, a symbol of national independence and the country's historical heritage. The tricolor flag, first adopted on November 9, 1918, by the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, was abolished during the Soviet era, but regained its status after the restoration of independence in 1991.
The flag's symbolism incorporates important elements: blue symbolizes Turkism, red represents the desire for modernity, and green represents Islam. The crescent moon symbolizes Islamic culture, and the eight-pointed star represents the eight Turkic peoples.
National Flag Day has been officially celebrated in Azerbaijan since 2009.
