Baku expresses concern over killing of Azerbaijanis in Russia

The Azerbaijani Embassy in Russia is working on the issue of delivering the bodies of the Safarov brothers, who were killed the day before in Yekaterinburg, to Baku, the country's Foreign Ministry reported.

"We express deep concern over the raids by the Russian FSB on the homes of Azerbaijanis in Yekaterinburg on June 27, which resulted in the death of our compatriots, some of whom received serious bodily injuries, and nine people were detained," the ministry said.

According to the statement, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry expects that "the Russian side will conduct an immediate investigation into this matter and bring to justice those who committed this violence."

The Investigative Committee and the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs have disseminated information about the operation in Yekaterinburg, during which Azerbaijanis were killed. As a result, two people were killed and nine were detained. One of the two killed brothers, Guseyn Safarov, is a citizen of Azerbaijan, the other, Ziyaddin Safarov, is a citizen of Russia. They are suspected of murdering a merchant in Yekaterinburg in 2001.

Billionaire and former Nagorno-Karabakh state minister Ruben Vardanyan, sentenced in Baku to 20 years in prison, rejected the legal force of the ruling and dropped his appeal. His family explained that this decision stemmed from the fact that, in their view, the trial was a "staged performance" rather than a proper trial: the hearings were held behind closed doors, without access to independent observers, and the prosecution's motions were ignored. The full text of the verdict was also not released.
