Baku has once again outlined its position on the war between Russia and Ukraine

Head of the Foreign Policy Department of the Presidential Administration of Azerbaijan Hikmet Hajiyev expressed the country's position on the Russian-Ukrainian war in an interview with the Slovak publication Hospodárske noviny.

"Russia is our neighbor. We have good neighborly relations with it. And having good relations with all our neighbors is the number one priority not only for Azerbaijan, but for every country in the world. But the same applies to Ukraine," Hajiyev noted.

He recalled that many Azerbaijanis live in both Ukraine and Russia and that many mixed marriages have been registered. Based on this, what is happening today is "a truly great tragedy." According to the presidential aide, "it literally breaks the hearts of Azerbaijanis when they see tragic scenes from the ongoing conflict on TV or on the Internet."

Gadzhiev emphasized that Baku does not provide military support to any of the parties, while supplying humanitarian aid to Ukraine.

"We deliberately stay away from any supplies of military equipment to this conflict. We provide only humanitarian aid to Ukraine, especially to children, who suffer the most. We also supply necessary equipment, such as electric generators. However, we do not participate in any military support and are not part of such initiatives. This is due to the fact that Azerbaijan is one of the so-called non-aligned countries," the head of the department of the Presidential Administration concluded.

Billionaire and former Nagorno-Karabakh state minister Ruben Vardanyan, sentenced in Baku to 20 years in prison, rejected the legal force of the ruling and dropped his appeal. His family explained that this decision stemmed from the fact that, in their view, the trial was a "staged performance" rather than a proper trial: the hearings were held behind closed doors, without access to independent observers, and the prosecution's motions were ignored. The full text of the verdict was also not released.
