Serious Crime Rate Increases in Four Regions of the North Caucasus

According to statistics from the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs, 3.9 thousand serious and especially serious crimes were registered in Dagestan from January to August of this year, which is 21% more than the same figure for last year. Such crimes include those that are punishable by imprisonment for a term of 10 years, including murder, rape and terrorist acts.

In addition to Dagestan, an increase in the number of serious and especially serious crimes was also noted in Chechnya (an increase of 122% to 605 cases), Ingushetia (an increase of 10% to 585 cases) and Karachay-Cherkessia (an increase of 10% to 1.1 thousand cases).

In general, 16.2 thousand crimes of this category were recorded in the North Caucasus Federal District, which is 2.5% less than last year. The decrease in the overall indicator is due to a reduction in their number in Kabardino-Balkaria (by 6%, to 1.6 thousand), North Ossetia (by 10%, to 1.9 thousand) and Stavropol Krai (by 3%, to 6.8 thousand).
