Georgian Prime Minister resigns

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili confirmed that he has resigned. He will take the post of chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party.

“I will not hide that the political council discussed the possibility of me remaining in office until the summer, until the start of the election campaign, but I decided to make this decision now. It is important that the next prime minister presents his team on time and forms a new government,” Garibashvili said.

Irakli Garibashvili headed the government twice. The first time - from November 2013 to December 2015, the second time - from February 22, 2021. According to forecasts, Irakli Kobakhidze, who is currently the chairman of the Georgian Dream, will become the country's new prime minister.

The name of the new candidate for the post of Prime Minister of Georgia will be announced at the congress of the ruling party on February 1. Parliament has two weeks to express confidence in the new prime minister and the government he represents.
