Saakashvili: Georgian Dream signed a document in support of Ukraine to spite Russia

Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili stated that the ruling party's signing of a document in support of Ukraine was motivated not so much by fears of an international investigation as by a desire to irritate Russia.

Saakashvili claims that Moscow views Georgian Dream founder Bidzina Ivanishvili, a billionaire and former Russian citizen, as a deceiver, and that Russian demands on Georgia continue to mount. Although the ruling party signed a document in support of Ukraine, which is a positive development in itself, Saakashvili believes the main purpose of this move was to "tick Moscow's nerves."

"We should pay attention to the statements by Lavrov and Zakharova, who recently declared there were no grounds for restoring relations with Georgia. Putin is convinced that Ivanishvili deceived him, and perhaps not without reason," Saakashvili noted.

According to him, Ivanishvili took a number of steps to please Russia: he rejected rapprochement with the European Union, announced an apology to the Ossetians, and blocked transit to Azerbaijan, but this proved insufficient. Russia, seeing Georgia weakened and isolated, is demanding that Ivanishvili fulfill his alleged promise to recognize Abkhazia and South Ossetia, beginning with a formal agreement with these territories. Furthermore, according to Saakashvili, Russia demands Georgia's return to the CIS and accession to the Customs Union, an immediate declaration of neutrality, and the establishment of a Russian "anti-terrorism center" on Georgian territory.

An international body was recently established in The Hague to review Ukraine's claims against Russia and decide on reparations payments, estimated at tens of billions of euros. The establishment of the commission was formalized by the signing of a corresponding document by representatives of more than 30 countries. On the Georgian side, the agreement was signed by Maka Bochorishvili, the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, representing the Georgian Dream government.
