An investigation into the former president's possible dual citizenship is ongoing in Armenia

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding former Armenian President Armen Sarkissian's possible foreign citizenship is ongoing. This was reported by the press service of the Investigative Committee of Armenia.

In April 2023, the National Security Service of the Republic of Armenia transferred the case file on Sarkissian's alleged foreign citizenship to the Investigative Committee for further investigation.

As a reminder, Armen Sarkissian resigned as president on January 23, 2022, citing a lack of authority to influence the political situation in the country. A day later, on January 24, Hetq.am published information stating that prior to his election as president, Sarkissian was allegedly a citizen of the Caribbean country of Saint Kitts and Nevis, which violates the requirements for a presidential candidate.

According to Hetq.am, Sargsyan received citizenship of this country after investing $500,000 in its economy.

Billionaire and former Nagorno-Karabakh state minister Ruben Vardanyan, sentenced in Baku to 20 years in prison, rejected the legal force of the ruling and dropped his appeal. His family explained that this decision stemmed from the fact that, in their view, the trial was a "staged performance" rather than a proper trial: the hearings were held behind closed doors, without access to independent observers, and the prosecution's motions were ignored. The full text of the verdict was also not released.
