Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev missed the informal CIS summit in St. Petersburg due to a busy work schedule. Aliyev's administration also noted that his absence from the meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council on December 21 was due to Azerbaijan not being a member of the organization.
The European Parliament resolution on the possibility of granting Armenia candidate status for accession to the European Union should become the subject of broad public discussions in the country. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated this.
“Such messages need even greater public resonance, and should not be limited only to the government’s reaction. We have the will to further deepen Armenia-EU relations,” Pashinyan said.
In turn, the head of the Armenian parliament Alen Simonyan noted the importance of even closer rapprochement with the West. “Armenia is committed to actively working to deepen cooperation with the EU, based on common democratic values and aspirations,” he wrote on the social network.
In addition to providing the opportunity to apply for EU candidacy, the European Parliament called for closer economic and trade cooperation with Armenia and support for the Armenian armed forces. “If someone threatens the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Armenia, sanctions must be applied against these individuals and structures,” the resolution of European deputies says.
