The International Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has expressed strong disapproval of the prison terms requested by the prosecutor for nine activists and journalists from Toplum TV, which range from 13 to 16 years. Gulnoza Said, CPJ program coordinator, emphasized that such harsh punishments demonstrate the Azerbaijani authorities' desire to respond to courageous reporting and sow a climate of fear.
The Russian Prosecutor General's Office has discovered assets worth 190 million rubles belonging to Magomed Kushtov, the former head of the Federal Tax Service for Ingushetia, and his brother, Ilyas, who holds the position of deputy head of a department in the same tax service. The property was registered to relatives and trusted individuals. The assets include expensive real estate in Moscow, North Ossetia, and Ingushetia, as well as a fleet of luxury cars.
The Prosecutor General's Office has filed a lawsuit demanding the seizure of the property and its transfer to the state. Magomed Kushtov left the tax service on November 1. According to the office, between 2018 and 2024, the Kushtov brothers acquired a significant amount of expensive property, including real estate and cars, and also spent large sums on personal needs.
Assets registered to third parties include apartments in Moscow, land plots with houses in North Ossetia, an apartment in Magas, and Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, GMC, and BMW vehicles.
Ilyas Kushtov was previously arrested in connection with a case involving 137 million rubles in damages to the budget and is currently in custody.
