Unemployment in the North Caucasus remains a serious problem, three times higher than the Russian average. According to Rosstat data for September 2025, while the national average is 2.1%, in the North Caucasus Federal District it reaches 7.1%.

Auditors from the Accounts Chamber have uncovered serious budgetary irregularities in Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachay-Cherkessia, where inefficient spending totaled 1.7 billion rubles. This money was allocated to create special economic zones (SEZs), but the expected results were never achieved.

Mortgages are becoming increasingly unaffordable for residents of Dagestan and North Ossetia. According to a RIA Novosti study, the average two-person family in Dagestan spends 84.8% of their salary on mortgage payments, while in North Ossetia, this figure is even higher – 87.3%. In September 2025, Ingushetia experienced the most significant increase in consumer gasoline prices among Russian regions. According to Rosstat, they increased by 8.5% in the republic compared to August, more than three times the national average of 2.6%.

The Republic of Ingushetia scored 5.56 points out of a possible 100, taking 85th place in the ranking of Russian regions based on scientific and technological development. The Jewish Autonomous Oblast and Altai also ranked among the worst three.

The Russian Union of Auto Insurers (RSA) has identified the North Caucasus regions of Dagestan, Ingushetia, Chechnya, North Ossetia, and Kabardino-Balkaria as high-risk zones due to CMTPLI fraud. Nearly all insurance companies operating in these republics are experiencing CMTPLI payouts that exceed insurance premiums, which, at best, results in zero profit.

According to Minister of Labor and Social Protection Anton Kotyakov, approximately 5 million Russians will be involved in the informal economy by 2025. He noted that the situation is most severe in the North Caucasus regions, particularly Ingushetia and Dagestan, as well as Tyva and Kalmykia.

Based on the 2024 results, Ingushetia and Chechnya ranked 85th and 83rd among Russian regions in terms of material well-being. Tuva ranked between them.
